Germany Opportunity Card 2026: Requirements, Points, Costs & Work Rules

Do you want to find a job in Germany but don't already have a job offer?

The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a residence permit that allows eligible applicants from outside the EU to come to Germany to search for employment or certain recognition measures.

The Opportunity Card can initially be issued for up to 12 months. During this period, you can search for suitable employment while also working within specific limits.

What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card was introduced as part of Germany's Skilled Immigration Act to make it easier for eligible foreign jobseekers to come to Germany and search for employment.

One of its biggest advantages is that you do not necessarily need a German job offer before applying.

However, you must meet the eligibility requirements and prove that you can financially support yourself during your stay.

Two Ways to Qualify for the Opportunity Card

There are two different routes.

Route 1: You Are Already a Recognised Skilled Worker

If you have:

• A German university or vocational qualification, or

• A foreign university/vocational qualification that is fully recognised or comparable/equivalent in Germany as required,

you can potentially qualify directly as a Fachkraft (skilled worker).

You do not need to collect 6 points under this route.

The points system is primarily for applicants who don't qualify through the direct skilled-worker route.

Route 2: The 6-Point System

If you don't have full German recognition, you may still qualify through the points route.

You generally need an eligible:

Foreign university degree

or

Foreign vocational qualification

The qualification must meet the applicable recognition requirements in the country where it was obtained. For a vocational qualification, the training generally must have lasted at least two years.

You must also demonstrate at least:

German A1

OR

English B2

and then obtain:

At Least 6 Points

How Does the 6-Point System Work?

If you're applying through the points route, points are awarded for several factors.

Partial Recognition — 4 Points

If you've already completed a German recognition procedure and your foreign qualification has been found partially equivalent, you can receive:

4 points

This can also apply in certain regulated professions where compensatory measures are still required before obtaining permission to practise.

Qualification in a Shortage Occupation — 1 Point

If your formal qualification is in an eligible shortage occupation:

1 point

Shortage occupations can include fields such as healthcare, IT, engineering and teaching, depending on the applicable classification.

Professional Experience — Up to 3 Points

Relevant professional experience connected to your formal qualification can provide:

2 points — At least 2 years of relevant professional experience within the last 5 years.

3 points — At least 5 years of relevant professional experience within the last 7 years.

The experience used for these points must relate to your formal qualification and have been gained after graduation.German Language Points

German above the A1 baseline can provide additional points:

A2 German → 1 point

B1 German → 2 points

B2 German or higher → 3 points

Remember: A1 itself is one of the possible basic language requirements for entering the points route; the additional German-language points start at A2.

Can English Give You Points?

Yes.

If you demonstrate English C1 or higher, or qualify as a native English speaker under the applicable rules, you can receive:

+1 additional point

This is separate from English B2, which can satisfy the basic language requirement for entering the points route.

Age Points

Your age at the time of your visa application can also provide points:

Up to age 35 → 2 points

Age 35–39 → 1 point

Germany's official guidance describes the two-point category as applying until the day you turn 35.

Previous Stay in Germany — 1 Point

You may receive:

1 point

if you can prove a legal and continuous stay in Germany for at least six months during the previous five years.

Examples can include qualifying stays for study, language courses or employment.

Ordinary tourist and visitor stays do not count for this criterion.

Spouse or Registered Partner — 1 Point

If your spouse or registered partner also meets the requirements for an Opportunity Card and you intend to immigrate together, you may receive:

1 additional point.

You need at least 6 points if you're applying through the points-system route.

Do You Need a Job Offer Before Applying?

No.

The purpose of the initial Opportunity Card is to allow eligible applicants to come to Germany to search for employment.

Therefore, you don't need to already have your future qualified full-time position before applying for the normal job-search Opportunity Card.

You do, however, need to satisfy the qualification, financial and other applicable requirements.

Can You Work on the Opportunity Card?

Yes.

This is one of the Opportunity Card's most attractive features.

German law allows Opportunity Card holders during the initial search period to work an average total of:

Up to 20 Hours Per Week

This can be one or more secondary jobs, provided the overall permitted limit is respected.

This is written directly into §20a of the German Residence Act.

Can You Do Trial Work?

Yes.

German law also permits certain trial employment for up to two weeks per employer.

The trial employment must meet the applicable conditions—for example, it must be qualified, aim toward vocational training, or be suitable in connection with an eligible recognition measure.

This gives applicants an opportunity to meet employers and demonstrate their skills while already in Germany.

How Much Money Do You Need for the Opportunity Card in 2026?

You must demonstrate that your living costs in Germany are secured.

For 2026, Germany's official Opportunity Card guidance states a general amount of:

€1,091 Net Per Month

This can generally be demonstrated using a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung).

Can Part-Time Income Help With the Financial Requirement?

Potentially, yes.

Germany's official guidance explains that a part-time employment contract can be considered when demonstrating financial means.

If your net monthly income reaches the required amount, this can satisfy the financial requirement. If the income is lower, the remaining difference can potentially be covered through a blocked account.

This should always be assessed according to the applicant's actual situation.

How Long Is the Opportunity Card Valid?

The initial Search Opportunity Card (Such-Chancenkarte) can be issued for:

Up to 1 Year

This maximum initial period is specified directly in §20a of the German Residence Act.

The purpose of this period is to find suitable employment or an eligible recognition pathway.

What Happens When You Find a Job?

Finding a suitable job is the objective—but the Opportunity Card itself isn't necessarily the residence title you'll use for your long-term employment.

Depending on your qualification, salary, profession and job offer, you may be able to apply for an appropriate residence title such as a:

Skilled-worker residence permit

EU Blue Card

Professionally experienced worker pathway

Recognition-related residence permit

or another applicable employment residence title.

Your individual eligibility determines which residence title is appropriate.

Can the Opportunity Card Be Extended?

There is a special Follow-up Opportunity Card (Folge-Chancenkarte).

German law allows an extension for up to two years where the applicant has a contract or binding offer for qualified employment and the other statutory conditions are met, including the situation where they don't qualify for another applicable employment residence permit.

This is important:

It is NOT an automatic two-year extension for everyone.

The conditions must be satisfied.

Does the Opportunity Card Guarantee a Job?

No.

The Opportunity Card provides an opportunity to search for employment from within Germany.

It does not guarantee:

✗ A particular salary

✗ Visa approval

✗ Permanent residence

Your qualification, experience, German ability, profession, job-market demand and application quality can all affect your results.

Do You Need German?

For the points-system route, the basic language requirement is:

German A1 OR English B2.

However, meeting the immigration requirement and successfully finding employment are two different things.

Even when English satisfies the Opportunity Card requirement, German can significantly improve your ability to communicate with employers and access a wider range of jobs.

If you are planning to build your career in Germany, improving your German before arrival can therefore be extremely valuable.

Is the Opportunity Card Right for Everyone?

No.

If you already have a suitable qualified German job offer, a direct employment visa may be more appropriate.

If your goal is Ausbildung, university study or another specific purpose, another visa category may also be better.
