If you're planning to move to Germany on an EU Blue Card, the minimum salary you need to qualify has gone up for 2026. Whether you're comparing job offers right now or preparing your application for later this year, here's what the new numbers mean for you.

The New 2026 Salary Thresholds

Germany reviews EU Blue Card salary requirements every year, and the 2026 figures are now in effect:

• Standard threshold: €50,700 gross per year (about €4,225 per month)

• Shortage occupation threshold: €45,934.20 gross per year (about €3,827.85 per month)

Both figures represent an increase over 2025, in line with Germany's rising pension insurance contribution ceiling, which is what these thresholds are legally tied to under Section 18g of the Residence Act (AufenthG).

Who Qualifies for the Lower Threshold?

Not everyone needs to hit the full €50,700 mark. The reduced threshold of €45,934.20 applies if you fall into one of these groups:

1. Shortage occupations — Germany maintains an official list of professions facing skilled labor shortages, including many roles in IT, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, healthcare, and certain skilled trades.

2. Career starters — If you graduated from university within the last three years, you qualify for the reduced threshold regardless of your field.

3. IT specialists without a degree — If you don't hold a university degree but can show at least three years of relevant professional IT experience within the past seven years, plus a qualifying job offer, this pathway remains open to you.

What Counts Toward Your Salary?

This trips up a lot of applicants. Your qualifying salary is based on the contractually guaranteed gross annual remuneration in your employment contract. Regular, legally enforceable payments — such as a 13th-month salary or a fixed annual bonus written into your contract — can count toward the threshold. Discretionary or performance-dependent bonuses generally cannot, since they aren't guaranteed.

If your job offer is close to the threshold, it's worth checking exactly how your compensation package is structured before you submit your application.

Why This Matters If You Already Have an Offer

If you received a job offer late last year based on the old 2025 thresholds, it's worth double-checking that it still clears the 2026 bar. Applications submitted from 1 January 2026 onward are assessed against the new figures — not the numbers that applied when the offer was made. This has caught out a number of applicants and employers who assumed an already-signed contract would be grandfathered in.

Beyond Salary: What Else You Need

Meeting the salary threshold is necessary but not sufficient. A complete EU Blue Card application also requires:

• A recognized university degree, or a comparable qualification recognized in Germany

• A binding job offer or employment contract from a German employer that matches your qualification

• Proof that your qualification is relevant to the job (for shortage-occupation and IT pathways, this is examined closely)

Looking Ahead: The Path to Permanent Residence

One of the EU Blue Card's biggest advantages is the relatively fast route to a settlement permit (permanent residence):

• 21 months of qualifying employment and pension contributions if you have German language skills at level B1

• 27 months if you have German at level A1

Spouses of Blue Card holders are generally exempt from the pre-entry A1 German requirement and get unrestricted access to the German labor market from day one.
